I would just like to say I echo the statement made by RookiesHQ , If you can learn a little from everyone you eventually will become a much better seller . I have been in the top 10 on here over the last 2 years pretty consistently , however it was not until I read a post by RookiesHq that I decided to add my lower end inserts and singles . I have always only listed my higher end items but since I started adding my items I have had a ton of sales in the $10 - $20 range that I would have never had . I believe it is a business and needs to be treated that way so the more selection you have the more you will be exposed to customers , so I would like to publicly thank RookiesHQ for always giving tips and pointers to all the sellers . I also would like to say that they are your cards you know what you paid for them and what they are worth in your area , some of my cards may look like they are priced high because in my local area I can get that money at shows for them as well as I am sure the folks that are buying my stuff think that it is a good price for them to buy or resell . At the end of the day I truly believe the shipping and follow up to a sale is what keeps you your customers , I always try to contact buyers a week after there purchase to be sure they are happy with items. ( I got that from another top 10 seller on here ) I believe that has locked me up some customers for life !! Some times the saying rings true ---- YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR !!
Thank you
Mark Stoddard

RookiesHQ wrote:HOBBY or BUSINESS ?? That's the main point.
To us this is a business, not a hobby! We view things from a business point of view. That is a large part of our success and has been for over 21 years and nearly 10 years selling online. We love the hobby and cards, but this is a business.
If we treated it like a hobby would would no longer be in business.
That's a different point of view from part-time sellers or those who ran/owned a hobby store that is no longer in business.
It's also different from those who sell cards as a hobbist and to recoup the cost of the hobby.
It takes all types to sell on any selling venue and they all compliment each other and help the site grow.
We listened to our online MENTOR is the largest seller on the net. We also listened to other successful online sellers to figure out how best to approach our online business going back to 1999. We have often shared what we have learned so others can grow their business.
We want sellers to grown their business on SportsBuy so all sellers on SportsBuy can grow and increase sales.
We like to hear what others says, but we tend to listen and follow those who have had success. We would like to hear more from the Top 10 sellers if they wish to share their experiences.
You have made our difference of opinion very clear and it is not a matter of right or wrong but rather a difference in perspective. You very clearly see only the sellers benefits while I am interested in the consumers benefits and the hobby's future. It is hobby vs. business, or, buyer vs. seller. Just like in any market the consumer wants the best deal for their price while the seller is interested in making as much of a mark up as they can. They are different perspectives entirely. To me, growing up a nephew of a famous center fielder playing on the Mets, collecting cards was not just a hobby but a passion. I followed the stats on the back of cards day and night and when a holiday or my birthday came up I wished for nothing but Factory sets packs and singles. As I teen I found my hobby knowledge to be useful as I was able to predict hobby trends and cycles quite frequently and profited nicely. I started selling on-line, managed a shop and even opened my own shop AS A HOBBY. While I owned my own shop I still had another full time job and never choose to rely solely on my hobby for a choice of income but rather a supplement. I closed the doors because I had realized I could profit much easier on-line because of the endless amount of turnover I could produce. It became more about profiting off of knowledge which was more exciting. There was no need to have a shop any longer and most dealers are also realizing this now. While sellers like you are concerned with the best interest of other sellers, I will maintain my focus on the consumers and the hobby's best interest as that is the way the hobby brought me up. Great discussion. Good luck and Happy Selling!!
Good luck to you.

Wax,
You see this is why you dont get it. The comment is ill-informed as you know nothing about us or our business. Hobby shops are closing for many reason and they are mostly business related. They do not adapt with the trends of business, the cost of product, the poor business decision Topps & UD have made that help kill the hobby stores.
We have a strong PASSION for the hobby and our customers! If we didnt, we would not still be in business. Our Top 10 ranking every month also shows that we take very good care of our customers (aka the consumer you talk about) ....
We have an email database of thousands of SportsBuy customers who buy from us regularly and who value our product and our customer service.
Price ALONE will not save this hobby or help the collectors. Online wax discounter have helped kill many of the real hobby stores.
It takes a strong business to offer the price, selection and customer service to the consumer and help the get what they want. There probably less than 10 of those on the internet who can deliver that for single sports cards. Burbank Sportscard is the king daddy wiht over 1M cards. I wont name the others.
We need more strong internet single sellers to offer a wide selection (several 100,000s of cards) to help this hobby grow. Hopefully SportsBuy will host the next group of online singles mega sellers.
Our customers are valued and we work hard to make the as happy as possible and the result is our regular ranking in the Top 10. We like to see who is there and what they sell and how they do business and learn things from them.
Wax, we are going to see your store, we might even buy some of your listing since you sell them soo cheap.
IN FACT everyone should click on your link to your store!

We could not agree more with Rookies HQ and Mark Stoddard. Thank you both.
I have been a collector for more than 50 years, so I have the background to speak on the matter.
Rookies HQ is also right about Burbank Sports Cards. I have met Rob many times at the National Trade Conferences and I can only wish my online store can equal his. His physical store and online store is simple Amazing. His prices are not cheap either!
1. Customer Service
2. Selection
3. Shipping fast
4. Shipping cost
5. Price
I am sure there are more criteria you could list and price would never be the top priority in a survey.

Ha!! Spoken like a true salesman! (it is ok to screw people as long as you do it with a smile on your face and thank them on the way out) many buyers would beg to differ. We aren't going to agree and I am Ok with that.

Wax,
I am done with you and your expertise You seem to want to pick fights with anyone for no reason other than to amuse yourself. You actually challanged another member to a fist fight on another thread and even in jest, its not funny
I have looked at your site and your items you have for sale. I will state NO COMMENT on the images or listing titles.
I will try to refrain from your post and taunts until you are worthy. When will you be worthy? When you stop name calling, insulting other posters, and have sales that bring you into the top 10 on a regular basis.
http://forums.sportsbuy.com/posts/list/6623.page - Buyers with unfair expectations - This was the title of one of your first post and it really should have told me all i needed to know about how you conduct business.
If the other regular readers of this board go re-read that, they to will have all the need to know about you and your business/hobby perspective.
Good Luck and happy sales.

OMG I just checked your prices for the first time! How do you live with yourself!! Talk about business practices. You are about %500 above market value! Good luck to you, better yet your customers.
BTW I haven't had a negative complaint filed here or on Ebay in 6 years so you can take your analysis with your argument. Don't hate me for not congratulating you for getting people to overpay at an outrageous mark up. Your right there is no argument left.

Wax does amuse me alot. It doesnt appear he can do math or atleast percentages very well. You have to have sales in order to get feedback.
Our feedback on SportsBuy is over 103,000.
Thanks for the good laughs 2nite!

Wax and Rookies - Both of you knock it off.
Wax you need to do something positive on this site other that brag about who you uncle is. Make some sales, get in the top 10 and show us what you can do with all your ideas.
Rookies - Ignore him. It's beneath your contributions to this site and your business.

Ding Ding Ding. Looks like the ref is stopping the fight. It was just getting good to. The best reading this forum has offered. JK
Seriously, I understand your sentiments and apologize if I have offended you. Hopefully this topic has provided both sides of a very touchy subject. neither which I feel is right or wrong, just different. BTW- I never said I was proud of who my uncle is lol
